As the (rough) mid-point between our UK and Australian outposts, the Hybrid Kuala Lumpur office is something of a hub of activity for all of the company’s activities, encompassing teams from digital, editorial, and creative.
The Malaysian capital’s Q Sentral building, adjoining KL Sentral station, is a gleaming, air-conditioned tower block that dominates the skyline, and from their 19th-floor vantage point, the various teams help co-ordinate our activities right across the world.
Recent additions to Hybrid staff include two designers, Cece Loo & Imran Ali, and Elfin Choo who’s joined the digital team.
Together with our editorial regulars, the whole team creates compelling content across our platforms, covering technology and educational matters for our readers and clients.
There’s also a great deal of work that’s termed “off-platform” – undertakings for universities, schools, tech companies and organisations for their internal use. That can mean all manner of content, from advertising hoardings, bus shelter graphics, literature like web content to informational brochures, branded merchandise, or video.
Our KL editorial team also take full advantage of Malaysia’s central position in the Asia-Pacific region, attending the events, exhibitions, and conferences that take place regularly, from Singapore to Tokyo to Thailand. Recently, our Tech Wire Asia editor, Soumik Roy attended the RISE Conference 2019, interviewing the key figures present, including AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes and GIPHY CEO Alex Chung.
This year has seen plenty of visits to the Malaysian office from our Sydney and Bristol colleagues, too: Joe Craven, the Managing Director of Hybrid Australia spent some weeks with the team, and from the UK, Mark Jones (editor, TechHQ.com) and Max Longstaff (Creative Director) landed for a fortnight stint each, helping build collaborative working practices that let us work on our many projects, 24/7.
But any newcomer to our busy Kuala Lumpur team has to bring one thing to fit in: a passion for food! Like many Malaysians, all our staff (including ex-pats from Australia, the UK, and elsewhere too) love their food, and down-times are usually dominated by who’s eaten what, where, who’s cooking something tasty, who has the best recipes, and so on.
