Growing the editorial team: New faces in the KL office
September 18, 2020

As we enter into the last quarter of the year, we here at Hybrid are delighted to announce that we have three new members of staff who have recently joined our Kuala Lumpur editorial team. In uncertain times globally, to see a growing and thriving office has been a beacon of light for all of us.

Finding new talent in education and technology writing has had us searching for candidates from different backgrounds. One writer previously spent her days and very late nights managing marketing and social media for one of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular nightlife venues, another was working the agency life and our third team member had been successfully working freelance for her career.

All three possess the same qualities we look long and hard for in new recruits: A positive attitude, a curious mind, an easy-going nature, and enough combined talent to set the internet on proverbial fire. As our mighty office here continues to find new and exciting ways to tell you about how the world is developing and growing across education and business technology sectors, we look onwards and upwards in producing our best content yet.

Meet the latest additions to the team:

Name: Amanda Chin Tsu Chien

Age: 29

Role: Education Journalist

What were you doing before you joined Hybrid? I was the Marketing Manager for The Iron Fairies KL.

Iron Fairies, like the nightlife venue? What did your work life look like before the office? It was a lot of late nights, 6 days a week, I had no weekends to myself. Even during the week, I was working night shifts, so all the normal human being stuff like dinners after work, social gatherings were non-existent for me. I learned a lot about organising in this job, and how to deal with last-minute situations.

What do you think about your new role? I think it’s exciting to learn new things about the education industry, I like chasing after people for interviews and getting to know a little more about their backgrounds.

How do you find the office? I think everyone is interesting — Joe who sits across from me has a unique character… he’s pretty funny.

Hahaha — he IS quite the character.

What should your colleagues know about you? I love doughnuts

Any specific kind of donuts? Filled doughnuts, like creme brulee doughnuts.

PSA: Amanda’s birthday is in November and she will happily be accepting donuts.

Name: Haris Elias

Age: 31

Role: Technology Writer

What were you doing before you joined Hybrid? Copywriting for a digital marketing agency.

What do you think about your new role? It’s awesome to be around an exciting group of journalists in KL exploring the intersection where technology and business meet. Creating short and snappy one-liners in my previous role was fun from time to time but it is refreshing to write in-depth pieces about tech and its implications. Great to be able to implement both styles in an interesting way!

What should your colleagues know about you? I have a penchant for eating cake

All cakes? Lemon cakes and tiramisu are bae. Nothing too sweet.

What about donuts? Yeah I love donuts! Jam-filled are my classic go-to.

Have you met Amanda? You guys have a lot to chat about!

Name: Shekinah Kannan

Age: 25

Role: Education Writer

What were you doing before you joined Hybrid? I was a Freelance Writer.

What kind of writing were you doing? My first project was editing a book when I was 17. Over the years I have provided clients with presentation decks, project papers, marketing copy, and if I was lucky I’d be asked to write a lifestyle article or two. At 21, I was contracted to write for KL2017’s opening and closing ceremonies – I got to write an emcee script that was televised to hundreds of millions of people! It was scary but definitely exciting.

What do you think about your new role? After freelancing for eight years, I’m finally getting to experience being in a collaborative environment and it’s been so much fun! My editors provide ample guidance while also encouraging me to innovate and I have learned so much from them in such a short amount of time. I can feel myself progressing and despite taking in so much information everyday, it doesn’t at all feel draining. I also appreciate the level of trust that has been established even though I’m new, keeps me motivated!

Awe, thanks — that’s really nice of you to say. You’re doing great!

What should your colleagues know about you? I can’t whistle 🙁

So as we welcome these new faces to our team in Kuala Lumpur you can watch this space for incoming updates from Sydney & Bristol!
